The ladies of the Casa Grande Roller Derby are an example of a spirit that lives in Casa Grande and the positive movement towards change. I remember attending their first game a couple of years ago. I hadn’t been in business very long and was just starting up as the Bombers were too. They gave me chance and I attended their game with my food trailer. I watched them during their game and took pictures because I thought it was the coolest thing to see in person. It's been a couple of years since the game I attended, and we have both been lucky to be able expand and grow. Unfortunately, with opening my coffee shop I haven’t been able to keep up with them. Now they have a new home in town and are just down the street making it easier for everyone to watch their games and come out and support them.

The Bombers continue to persist and flourish as a group. They participate and donate their time and resources to events in town and started Lunch in the Park. Lunch in the Park is an event they host at Peart Park where they provide free toiletries and food to community members in need. The CG Bombers is a group of ladies that care and support their community. They will finally have their own home thanks to Kelli Brown’s determination and vision. Their grand opening event is this Saturday starting at 11:30 am at 798 N Picacho St.

I have personally experienced the struggle of taking on a renovation of an older building but at a smaller scale. I understand the persistence and determination it takes to overcome the difficulties that inevitable come up. Kelli and Ben Brown took on the enormous task of remodeling the building, which many of us use to attend P.E class. Taking on such a challenging task means sleepless nights, time and energy, and personal monetary investment into a building. Everyone talks about “they wish Casa Grande could have this or that”, but these ladies are making it happen. They continue to be positive role models to young girls in Casa Grande and in this county. I am very excited to be able to bring my food trailer out this Saturday and  participate in their grand opening.  I encourage all residents of Casa Grande to attend their grand opening and come out and support the CG Bombers. Attend their grand opening and be a part of the transformation of Casa Grande's downtown and historic districts.

Casa Grande's Largest Running Event

Once a year runners from across the country come down to Casa Grande to participate in one of the largest cross country meets in the United States, But you're probably wondering " What makes this race so special and why should I care?"

So let me answer that by telling the how it all started. The meet was originally created in 2006 at Queen Creek and took place at that their very own high school and was no where near as big as it is today.

One of the big issues with making a cross country meet or having a 5k in Arizona is the unbearable heat. With temperatures easily hitting the 100's most people wouldn't dare to step outside let alone try to run a 5k.  This is why you'll see most runs occurring at the crack of dawn before the rooster even wakes. The issue with this is that people don't like waking up that early.

The people from Queen Creek had a brilliant idea " why don't we just do it at night?" Thus, Desert Twilight was born.

Over the years Desert Twilight has been hosted at several locations due to its rapid growth and they were looking for a new location to host their race. Luckily, Casa Grande had a luxury golf resort tucked in its back pocket. That location being Francisco Grande.

Francisco Grande didn't start out as a luxury golf course and hotel. It was originally made to be the spring training grounds for the San Francisco Giants, but after the plans to build a highway near the hotel had failed so did Francisco Grande's plans to host the Giants.

Nowadays the hotel is used to host weddings and is the location of ASU's Preparatory high school. With Desert Twilight looking for a new venue and Francisco grande eager to bring people in, It only made for the two to work together
